Get Ready for the Pinewood  Derby!
Sunday, March 14th

Weigh-ins begin at 2 p.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.

The annual Pinewood Derby will be held Sunday, March 14 beginning with weigh-ins at 2:00 p.m.  Weigh-ins will close at 3:30 p.m., and races will begin at 4:00.  Scouts’ “siblings” will race first, followed by the Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos and than Webelos II’s (new this year!!!)   Also new this year is shiny aluminum track with computer timing. We have moved up to big league now!!

The race is run in heats – 2 heats per den, 2 heats per sibling group. Race order will be determined by computer system and track setup (sell that popcorn, we already bought the track).  A finals heat will take place with the top 8 fastest times across all of the dens. (note that if you are 4^th in your heat but in the top 8 overall you still race for gold in the finals) Awards will be given for “Best in Show,” “Overall Pack 73 Winner,” and a race winner for each Den. Top 3 places in each categories will get trophies,  Races have typically taken 2 ½ to 3 hours to complete. This year we have scheduled the race earlier in the year so winners can compete in districts if they choose to.

Derby car kits were handed out at the Blue and Gold Dinner.  If you didn’t get a car kit or you need another one, email rhelm@cbburnet.com. Each kit includes a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed five ounces and must not exceed the length of the stock cut of the car—5 inches. Note no flashing lights will be allowed during the race as it interferes with the timers.
Other than the previous basic design rules, the car can be carved and decorated as the designer chooses. Many scouts add weights to their designs to bring the car to the maximum allowable weight. Do I need to make a fancy or complicated car to race successfully in the Derby? No. The race has been won by every type of car from simple to exotic (think … a speeding hunk of swiss cheese!).

How much should I help my son with the creation of his car? Your son should do most of the work—coming up with a design idea, decorating, etc. Obviously, you will need to safely assist him with the use of any power tools that you/he may choose to use.
What is the most important tip for enjoying the Derby? Laugh a lot, cheer loudly and HAVE FUN!

Pack 73 New Race Track fundraiser:

1. The goal: The volunteer parent leadership committee agreed that the Pack needed a new alluminum pinewood derby race track to replace the 32-year-old track and electronic equipment that is nearing the end of its useful life. Many of the area Packs have been using upgraded equipment for quite some time. The goal for the entire Pack 73 is to sell $3500 worth of popcorn in one month. Of that $3500, 45% (or $1,575) will be returned to the pack, which provides enough monies to purchase the track. Another 25% goes to the Northern Star Council for area scouting activities.

2. Dates:
Start selling 2/22/10. Sale ends 3/24/10.
Simply take their order and write it on the form, collect the funds, and get the popcorn from your den leader and deliver the popcorn to the buyer. The Pack has already pre-ordered a supply of approximately $4200 worth of popcorn product, which arrives 2/27/10.  Once that inventory runs out, the scout will then need to deliver popcorn on 4/23/10. The Pack needs to return any unsold excess popcorn by 3/27/10.

3. Minimum sales per scout: $50

The sales brochure and order forms are available from your den leader. Note that there is an option to simply donate popcorn to the troops serving our country overseas. The Twin Cities scouts have shipped over 20 tons of popcorn to the troops and it is really appreciated.

6. Prizes: The brochure also shows the categories for prizes available. A scout needs to sell a minimum of $125 worth of popcorn to reach the first sales award level.

7.   Remember: People like popcorn and it is easy to sell. Good luck and have fun.

Blue and Gold Dinner

Scouts & Families,
It is time for our annual Blue & Gold dinner for Pack 73. We will begin at 6:45 p.m. Monday, February 22^nd, in the CTK Gym. This is a great chance for the entire family to come out and enjoy an evening of food and fun.
The pasta dinner from Michelangelo's will be buffet style, and you may get started as soon as you arrive. If there are any special dietary requests, please let me know ASAP. We will be taking donations for the dinner. Suggested amount is $10 per family.
This year's entertainment will be an Improv show delivered by a couple of stand up comics from Brave New Workshop. We'll also have awards and will be handing out pinewood derby cars!!

Don't Forget to Register For Ihduhapi!

The Pack 73 annual father-son winter overnight camping trip to YMCA Camp Ihduhapi is just a few weeks away.

Ihduhapi weekend is February 6 - 7.
( dont worry, you'll be home in plenty of time for the super bowl! )

The trip to camp Ihduhapi in Loretto, MN is always a highlight of the scouting year.

For those who have never been, boys and dads spend the night in rustic heated cabins with fellow scouts.
The weekend will be a mix of den and pack activities.
Dinner Saturday evening and breakfast Sunday morning is included.
Outdoor activities include broomball, hiking and sledding.
Inside the lodge, there is ping pong, billiards, foosball and floor hockey.
For the older Webelo scouts, past years have included activities such as zip line, high ropes course and a polar bear plunge!

Cost:
Father/Adult guardian = $50.00
First Scout = $50.00
Each Additional Scout = $35.00

Waiver – All children must have a waiver (attached) signed by a parent or guardian to enter the park.  Please bring these with you and give to the staff when you check in.

Other Information:
Grand Rio’s provides towels and have lockers available at a charge of $1.00 (4 quarters).  The locker rooms are very small and lockers were limited last year so make sure you travel light and leave other valuables in the car.  There is a limited grill to get food and beverages at the park.

Poinsettia Pick up Today!!

D-Day (delivery day)has arrived!

The plants are being delivered to CTK gathering space at about 3:00, and we will have plants available for pickup until the Pack meeting at 7:00 PM. Feel free to get them while picking your boy up from school today.

Please pick up your plants today, or make arrangements for someone else to get them for you. Many of the boys like to deliver them before the Pack meeting.

If you live nearby, I would suggest getting them home and into the house as soon as possible (the cold kills them). If that doesn't work for you, pick them up before the meeing and "stash" them in a corner of the school somewhere, and take them home after the meeting. We're looking to get them all into your hands before the Pack meeting tonight.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TODAY who can help get pull orders and take money. Please stop by to help (even for an hour) if you can.

Here are some important care instructions for the plants:

* If unable to deliver Friday night open the top of the plant sleeve to allow air to get into the plant.

* Limit the amount of time exposed to the cold and to keep the plant from freezing.

* When the plants get removed from the sleeve’s they should be checked to see if they need water.

* The sooner the plants can get out of the sleeves the better.

We have 60 extra plants, so ask for extras if you need them!

This Friday, December 5th at 7:00 - 8:30 PM at CTK (Social Hall- lower level) we have our always-popular Bingo Pack meeting with prizes galore! This is a family night, and while only kids can win prizes, all kids are eligible, so bring your brothers and sisters.

It is a night loaded with "swag." About 1/3 of all of the kids attending should leave with a nice Bingo prize. We are also awarding pocketknives to the 23 boys (actually parents of boys) who stepped up to sell 25 - 65 Poinsettia's each!

Some of the exciting upcoming events we will be talking about are :

Christmas Shoeboxes- December 14th, anytime between 12- 5 PM CTK Social Hall- this is a cooperative effort between Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. We will be filling and gift-wrapping about 100 shoe boxes filled with "stocking stuffer" items to be distributed to children of needy families in conjunction with St. Phillips.
Grand Rios Waterpark (in lieu of a January Pack meeting)- we'll take over the waterpark on Sunday, January 11th from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. Admission charge of $9 per person will cover an afternoon of fun and Pizza. Attached is a flyer with all of the details. Sign up with Brian Smogard Friday night.
Pancake Breakfast- Sunday January 25th- This is a "service project" we do in conjunction with the Boy Scouts, and the boys serve breakfast to CTK Parishioners and the general public.
Camp Ihduhapi- February 7th-8th. Jeff James will talk about this year's camp, and provide more information.

Finally, Poinsettia pickup is this Friday before the meeting from 4:15 - 7:00 PM at CTK Gathering Space. I can use volunteers, so please shoot me an email if you can help out.

Poinsettia Sales!

Deadline for Poinsettia Sales extended!

Get your final numbers to your den leaders by Monday 11/18/08.

If you haven't already, let your den leader know how many plants you've sold so far and an approximation of how many you plan to sell.

Poinsettia Sale- Very important!

This event generates about 75% of our income for the Pack which funds things like the Boy's Life subscriptions, Pack events (subsidies) and entertainment, books, neckerchiefs, slides etc. In almost all other Packs, all of these are additional costs to the boys. The district encourages multiple fund-raising events over the course of the year, but for us, this is our only fund-raiser.

One issue we are facing this year, is that our wholesale plant cost has risen by $1.00 per plant, so we need to sell more plants this year to make the same money.

This year, there are two different ways to approach this.

1) Commit to a certain number of plants, and on Saturday, December 6th and Sunday December 7th, have your boys sell the actual plants. Some families did this last year, and found it was much easier, and less time consuming.

2) The traditional approach of going door to door using the attached sheet, taking orders and collecting money, and then just delivering the plants the weekend of the 6th and 7th.

Once again, we will be awarding a new Cub Scout pocketknife (different type than any previous year) to every boy who sells at least 25 plants. For 50 or more plants, the knife is upgraded to a multi-blade camping pocketknife.

This is a great exercise for the boys in goal-setting, sales presentation skills as well as making a contribution to a not-for-profit group that they area part of!

Details: These gorgeous plants (Wagner's Greenhouse) are $13.00 each (about $1.50 less than buying them in the Wagner's store). Orders are due Monday, November 10th. Plants will be available for pickup at Christ the King Friday, December 5th, from 4:00 until the Pack meeting (Bingo).

March Pack Meeting/Arrow of Light Ceremony

At this meeting, we will award badges the Scouts have been working on all year. The highlight is the solemn Arrow of Light Ceremony, in which the Webelos II cross over the rope bridge to become Boy Scouts. This meeting will also be the kick-off to the Pinewood Derby, with car kits available for Scouts to take home.

Blue and Gold Dinner

The Blue & Gold Dinner is an event celebrated by all Cub Scouts across the nation. It marks the anniversary of Scouting and serves as a "thank you" for your support and participation. This event will serve as our February Pack meeting, and features:

- A fine family dining experience
- A magician for after-dinner entertainment
- Photos from Camp Iduhapi
- Badges presented to scouts by Den leaders

Sorry folks, I failed to include RSVP information for the Blue & Gold Dinner.

Ihduhapi 2008

Camp Ihduhapi 2008 is fast approaching!
We are currently taking registrations for this years Camp Ihduhapi overnight parent-son outing.

Camp Ihduhapi is one of the highlights of the scouting year. It is an overnight event at YMCA Camp Ihduhapi approximately 40 miles west of Minneapolis in Loretto, MN.
The boys always have a blast! There are great outdoor activities including a tremendous sledding hill.
Inside the lodge there is floor hockey, ping-pong, foosball, billiards etc.
Dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning are provided and included in the registration fee.
Everyone sleeps in heated cabins.

Cost: Scouts = $35 Adults = $50

We have reserved 100 bunks for Pack 73. Since there is limited space available, bunks will be reserved and assigned on a first come, first served basis. Registration deadline is Sunday, January 27th, 2008. All registration forms and registration fees must be received by Jeff James by January 27th.

Important Poinsettia Sale Update!

The Nov. 12 Pack Meeting was the original deadline for all poinsettia sales. Please bring your poinsettia order forms and checks/money collected thus far. We are extending the deadline an extra week! We will have new forms available that you can take with you for one last sales push, but we’d like to know how many we’ve sold thus far so we can place the order and pay for the plants.

Please make a copy of your order sheet before you turn it in because you will need it for plant delivery. If you need more order forms, the file is attached.

Poinsettias will be available for pick-up on Friday, December 7 between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. – before the December Pack Meeting -- at St. Thomas the Apostle upper parking lot main lobby. Please note pick-up location change from last year. Our December Pack Meeting and annual Bingo Party will start at 7 p.m., so be sure to pick up your poinsettias early and deliver as many as you can (or take them home) before the Pack Meeting. They should not be left in your car, as the cold will damage the plant. Please make arrangements to have your plants picked up if you are not able to do so between 5 and 7 p.m.

October Pack Meeting

What would the season be if not for the annual Halloween Pack Meeting? To set the mood, we’ll start out the evening in the gym with favorite campfire-approved ghost stories.

Next, Scouts will venture through the Haunted House, hosted by the Boy Scouts. Scouts will enter by age, with youngest going first (the Boy Scouts will “tone it down” for the little ones).

The night will wrap up with a bonfire and s’mores in the parking lot. All Scouts should wear their uniforms.

** Boy Scout Troop 89 will be accepting canned, non-perishable donations for a local food shelf. **

Fall Hayride

Saturday, November 10
1 p.m. (hayride will leave at 1:30 sharp)

Don’t miss our ever-popular Fall Hayride at Bunker Hills Regional Park horse stables in Andover (30 minutes from downtown). Cost is $7.50 per person and the entire family is invited. For directions and more details, please see our hayride flier.

Be sure to rsvp to Bill Kirkpatrick as soon as possible, so he knows how many wagons to reserve.

Annual Poinsettia Sale

Today the leaves may be golden, but soon you will have your choice of red, pink or white. Sound familiar? Yes, it’s time to begin our one and only fundraiser of the year: the Pack 73 Poinsettia Sale.
Once again, Wagner’s will supply the plants, which are always fresh and beautiful. Plants come in a 6.5 inch pot, with approximately five blooms per plant. Cost this year is $12.50 each, available in red, pink or white.

Each Scout is asked to sell a minimum of three plants, with prizes going to the top sellers. Last year’s top seller sold 69 plants! All Scouts selling 25 plants or more will receive a special Cub Scout pocketknife. This will be a different style than the one given last year. Collect ‘em all!

Last year was our best year ever, with 960 plants sold. Our goal this year is to reach 1,000!

Other Scout Packs have multiple fundraisers throughout the year, which is suggested by the Council. Instead, Pack 73 has one big fundraiser so we don’t have to sell Scout popcorn, etc. All the proceeds from the Poinsettia Sale go directly to Pack 73 to fund its activities throughout the year.

Our annual Poinsettia Sale is a great learning experience, teaching salesmanship and providing a sense of accomplishment. Good luck Scouts!

Poinsettia Sale Tips

Wear your uniform when selling poinsettias.

We are asking for payment at time of sale – cash or check accepted.

Use a clipboard for your order form, with an envelope to collect checks or cash.

Be sure to get a phone number. You will need to deliver the poinsettias when people are home and can bring them indoors.

Poinsettias make great gifts! Use them as client gifts or to decorate the office. Bring them to holiday parties, or as a gift to an elderly neighbor. The possibilities are endless!

Calling new Scouts!

Tiger/New Scout Recruiting Meeting

Tiger Scout families and others (through 5th grade) new to Pack 73 are invited to attend this informational meeting. Spread the work to those who may be interested in joining our fun and lively Pack for a great Scouting experience! Stay for the Pack meeting at 7pm.

School has started and it’s time to fire up a new year of Scouting! Volunteers will be on hand to collect registration forms (available on site) and dues before the meeting. Dues are $45 per Scout, which includes their handbook and Pinewood Derby kit. Our program is Spin, Pop, Boom presented by “Mad Science.” To see more about the event go to

Scout Uniforms

Just a reminder that Scouts should wear their uniforms to Pack and individual Den meetings; they can also be worn to school the day of the meetings. Uniforms can be purchased at the Viking Council Boy Scout Store in Golden Valley. (Take Hwy 100 to Glenwood Ave., turn west on Glenwood. We need a couple of 2nd grade parents to help guide the 2nd grade Wolves this year. Free uniform and guidance guaranteed! We also are looking for a few parents who might be interested in participating in our famous Pack committee meetings (once monthly) at Famous Dave’s and/or to lead just one Pack activity this year.
